Images of students & faculty

The programs in the Department of Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Counseling (ELCF) focus on the preparation of educational professionals who will address the needs of educational institutions in the greater New Orleans area and in other metropolitan communities in addition to the preparation of licensed professional counselors and counselor educators who will provide mental health services in these communities. There are no undergraduate programs in this department.

The Department offers the following graduate degree programs: M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration and M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Counselor Education.

Educational Leadership Options (Advanced)

The department offers no undergraduate degree programs. The emphasis area in Educational Administration is preK-12 School Leadership on the master’s and doctoral levels, and PreK-16 Educational Administration on the doctoral level.

  • Master's in Educational Leadership
  • Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration

Human Development Options (Advanced)

Department faculty provide graduate educational foundations and research courses for all programs in the College of Education and Human Development; contribute to the scholarship in educational leadership, counseling, and educational research; provide leadership in the New Orleans, Louisiana region, and the United States in the professional areas of educational leadership, counseling and educational research; administer externally-funded grants and projects in educational leadership and counseling; and provide leadership in professional associations related to educational leadership, counseling, and educational research.

Graduate candidates who take educational foundations and research courses offered in our department are provided with current information in the field and are taught the skills necessary to understand professional literature based on research and to conduct research themselves.  Candidates are given a strong foundation in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and techniques. Graduate programs in educational leadership follow best practices in administrator preparation. Graduate students in educational leadership at the master’s level are prepared to be administrators in preK-12 schools. The master’s degree programs in preK-12 educational leadership and in school counseling meet Louisiana State Department of Education requirements for certification.  The master’s degree programs in counseling also provide the academic degree and the courses necessary to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Louisiana.  The master’s degree program in educational leadership meets the professional board review requirements for accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Council of Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP) accredits the master’s and doctoral degree programs in counseling (http://www.cacrep.org).

At the doctoral level, graduate students are prepared to be professors, researchers, and professional leaders in the areas of educational leadership or counseling. Our ELCF programs are role-based and integrate theory and research with practice in order to develop scholars of leadership, human development, and prepare practicing professionals who aspire to broaden the body of knowledge in their selected fields and thereby inform educational and mental health policies in our city, our state, and our nation.
