Dr. Burrell is an alumnus of New Orleans Public Schools and a former special education teacher and chairperson of the special education department at Samuel J. Peters (more recently named Israel Augustine) Middle School in New Orleans. She has served in leadership roles with various organizations, such as the Council for Children with Behavior Disorders (CCBD) Foundation, the Greater New Orleans chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), and The Extra Mile (TEM), Jefferson. Also, she has created and/or coordinated various professional development initiatives such as Teacher Talk, Special Topics Colloquium, and Young Scholars Conference. Her special interests include working with parents and families, integrated instructional strategies, and students who are at-risk/at-promise. Dr. Burrell is the coordinator for the Program in Mild/Moderate Disabilities at UNO and the originator of the Parent Mentorship Program.
