John G. Barnitz, Ph.D.

emptyDr.John G. Barnitz is an educational applied linguist, an urban literacy education researcher, a teacher educator and school consultant in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of New Orleans (since 1978). Dr. Barnitz teaches a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses in fields of Reading, English Language Arts, and ESL Education. He is widely published in various journals, especially those of the International Reading Association for which he has also served over the years on various editorial review boards.  Dr. Barnitz has also served for nearly eight years as past Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Dr. Barnitz's research interests include:  linguistic aspects of reading development, such as syntactic and textual aspects of reading comprehension;  literacy education of linguistically and culturally diverse learners; and, the roles of creative arts and athletics in literacy education of urban youth.

emptyDr. Barnitz has received several honors including the University of New Orleans Alumni Association Award for Excellence in University Teaching, and an honorary research professorship for scholarly productivity and commitment to research.  He also was honored at Northeastern Illinois University by being co-named in an endowed scholarship entitled The Brommel, Kramer and Barnitz Scholarship in Communication, Media, and Theatre.  He is also a distinguished alumnus to the Gordon Tech High School Alumni Hall of Fame.

emptyJohn and his wife, Christine, have our adult children.  The Barnitz Family is active in various church, school, and community organizations.
