Jim Furman first moved to New Orleans in 1999. He taught language arts and social studies for three years at Fannie C. Williams Middle School and then moved to Nashville to attend graduate school. His major area of study at Vanderbilt University was Language, Literacy, and Culture and his dissertation focuses on the experiences of student teachers preparing to teach literacy and English in diverse settings. In addition to research in the area of teacher education, he is also interested in adolescent literacies and young adult literature. He recently worked for a year as an instructor in English Education at the University of Delaware.
