Kyle Scafide received a Bachelor of Arts degree (philosophy) from St. Joseph Seminary College in 1984 and entered graduate school at De Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven in Belgium. He finished his M.A. at Notre Dame Theological in 1990 and began teaching part-time at Delgado Community College, where he worked for four years. From 1991 until 1996, he also taught part-time at Holy Cross College. During those years, he taught two or three classes a semester, though his full-time career was real estate.
He completed his second Master’s degree (M.Ed., UNO) in 2001 and immediately pursued the doctorate. In 2004, while still conducting research for his dissertation, he worked for a short time in the educational software private sector. He returned to UNO in 2005 in order to assist the college with the NCATE accreditation process.
In 1992, Scafide purchased a publication, IMPACT, and worked first as publisher, then as editor-in-chief. He sold the publication in 1998. Scafide has been very active in the l/g/b/t community. He was on the founding local committee of the Human Rights Campaign and was a founding board member of the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of New Orleans. In 1997 he was chosen by Gambit Weekly as one of New Orleans’ “Top 40 under 40.”
