Teacher Certification Program Options

Initial Teacher Certification can be obtained via three "pathways":

1. The undergraduate program, which culminates with a bachelor's degree

2. Alternate certification program #1*: Non-Master's (Non-degree) pathway, or

3. Alternate certification program #2*: The Practitioner ("Fast Track") program

*In order to be eligible for either of the alternate certification programs, one must have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Note: Completers of the alternate certification pathways often consider fulfilling the additional requirements for a Master's degree.

PRAXIS Requirements for ALL Certification Programs

Educational Testing Services (ETS) offers the PRAXIS exam series for those candidates who are preparing for school careers. The state of Louisiana and the University of New Orleans require passage of these tests. If candidates meet the new criteria related to ACT or SAT scores, they are not required to take PRAXIS I; however, satisfactory scores in all PRAXIS II tests are required. Please refer to the guidelines and requirements in the two following PDF files:
