Alternate Certification Programs:
Graduate Alternate Certification and
Practitioner (Teach GNO) Programs

There are different "pathways" to teacher certification. The most common pathway is still the conventional undergraduate program, but the University of New Orleans College of Education and Human Development offers other options for those who have already received a Bachelor's degree.

1. Graduate Alternate Certification Program

This certification-only program is designed to provide all of the coursework and experiences necessary to obtain Louisiana certification without pursuing an academic degree.

Certification Areas Offered
Certification areas include: PK-Grade 3, Grades 1- 5, Grades 4-8 and Grades 6-12 (content areas: English, mathematics, social studies, and science), and Special Education.

This program of study assists candidates as they apply content and skills in school settings while completing coursework.

Program Admission
Admission to this program requires an overall grade point average of 2.5 and passage of PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II. PRAXIS I is not required for candidates who already have a Master’s degree.

Program of Study
The program of study varies according to the certification area desired, the academic and experience background of the candidate, and the performance of the candidate in the program.

Field Experience Requirements
Throughout the program, candidates complete field activities in school and classroom settings. Field work is supported through enrollment in 6 credit hours of an internship, taken in a specific sequence.

Requirements for Completing Program
All certification programs in the College of Education and Human Development are performance-based. Candidates develop a professional portfolio to document their ability to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions associated with effective teaching. Completion of the program of study requires successful performance in both coursework and applied field activities. Candidates must meet specific requirements to advance in the program, and additional assessments must be taken to complete the program and be recommended for certification.

Louisiana Teacher Certification
Candidates who successfully complete all program requirements are recommended to the Louisiana Department of Education for certification.

Continuation of Program of Study to Receive a Masters Degree
Dependent on performance, candidates may apply credit hours for certification toward a Master’s of Education degree.

2. Teach Greater New Orleans

Through a fast-track certification program, the University of New Orleans accelerates the process for qualified new teachers to enter the classrooms where they are needed most. Instead of following the traditional path of completing education coursework prior to entering the classroom, Teach Greater New Orleans teachers complete academic requirements to become certified as they teach. .

These requirements must be completed before entrance into the Teach GNO program:

    • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university with at least a 2.5 overall grade point average on all college coursework to date.

    • Passing scores on the Praxis I. Individuals with master's degrees or higher are exempt from taking PRAXIS I. Candidates who have earned an ACT composite score of 22 or a combined verbal and math SAT score of 1030 are exempt from taking the PRAXIS I.

    • Passing scores on the Praxis II content area exam. Passing scores must be submitted before the program begins. To determine appropriate content area exam, see the Praxis guidelines .
