The Webcast was free to those with a UNO email address, since the University is a member of WCET, an educational technology organization founded in 1989 by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.
Speaker, who has a longstanding interest in global education and technology, is associate coordinator for virutual outreach and manages the Louisiana Regents Estate in Second Life through a grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents. He spoke about UNO’s experiences following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008.
UNO was the first university in New Orleans to reopen after Hurricane Katrina struck and the only local university to offer a fall semester, launching a mini-semester in October 2005, using Blackboard (Bb) and remote locations. Since then, UNO has added emergency phone notification and a virtual campus in Second Life to its emergency repertoire. Speaker included in the discussion how these innovations were tested and operated without problems during the 2008 storms.
In addition to Dr. Speaker, Webcast participants were: Joe Tykwinski, chief information officer for Valley City State University in North Dakota where on-campus classes were interrupted in the spring 2009 semester because of river flooding, and Shannon Meadows, vice president of higher education for Blackboard Connect, Inc.

Dr. Reynolds, LA-LIDC, co-sponsor ACE-D/HH conference and workshop
March 3, 2009
The 35th Annual International Conference of College Educators Deaf/Hard of Hearing (ACE-D/HH) was held at the Hotel Monteleone, Wednesday, March 4 - Sunday, March 8. On Thursday morning (3/5) from 10:00 until 1:00 in the Bienville Room, ACE-D/HH and the Louisiana Low Incidence Disabilities Consortium Project co-sponsored a faculty workshop on Distance Learning. This workshop targeted the topics of electronic delivery of courses, collaboration across the web for co-teaching, and an introduction to learning object repositories. The Louisiana Low Incidence Disabilities Consortium Project (LA-LIDC) is a multi-million dollar Louisiana Department of Education grant supported partnership between UNO (the lead agency), The Human Development Center of the School of Allied Health at LSU, and Louisiana Tech University and out-of state partners. The goal of this initiative is to establish a sustainable consortium to increase Louisiana’s capacity for statewide availability of high-quality, performance-based initial and advanced teacher education programs and professional development opportunities via electronic distance delivery that lead to additional and better prepared teachers of children with low incidence disabilities (Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Significant Disabilities, Blind/Visual Impairments, Autism, Deaf-Blindness). Thursday’s workshop presenter was Michael Anderson, who leads the Course Development and Technology team at the University of Texas (UT) System online education group (the UT TeleCampus), which offers more than 300 fully-online graduate and undergraduate courses and programs. His team manages the technology infrastructure and provides training and project oversight for all Web-based instructional design and course development to UTTC faculty and staff. The team also builds custom applications and courses for UT campuses in areas such as Paralegal Certification, IT Security compliance, and Emergency Room Psychiatry. UTTC created TRACK (TAKS Readiness And Core Knowledge), the 11th grade diagnostic/tutorial application that has been used by more than 350,000 students since its launch. "I am excited that Michael will be joining us for this workshop," said Dr. Kate Reynolds, who added that he also consulted with the LA-LIDC project on Friday as the team continues to refine the learning object repository. She strongly stated that, "We must continue our efforts to attract students and school districts across the state to our certification courses and professional development opportunities via distance learning in order to provide quality teachers for students who have low incidence disabilities". She emphasized that programs such as Associate Dean Sharpton's program in Significant Disabilities is the ONLY such program in the state and hers in Deaf Education is the ONLY teacher preparation program in 2 states (Louisiana AND Arkansas). All students in Louisiana must complete the program at UNO to gain certification (or go out-of-state) in these national areas of critical need." Individuals with questions on LA-LIDC or the synchronous web-conferencing system LA-LIDC instructors use to teach classes are encouraged to contact Dr. Reynolds via e-mail (lalidc@uno.edu).

St. Vincent And The Grenadines, University Of New Orleans Discuss Early Childhood Education Partners
CaribWorldNews, NEW ORLEANS, LA, Fri. May 8, 2009: Discussion of an early childhood partnership between the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the University of New Orleans has begun.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ambassador to the United States, La Celia A. Prince, recently met with University of New Orleans Chancellor Timothy Ryan and officials of UNO’s College of Education and Human Development to discuss development of a partnership with St. Vincent and the Grenadines to support Early Childhood Education.
On May 1, 2009, Ambassador Prince also visited Medard Nelson-UNO Charter School, where she observed a pre-kindergarten classroom. `This site visit has allowed me to see elements that we may incorporate into our Early Childhood Education system, making it more interactive; making it one that allows for the individual child to develop their natural propensities, rather than having everybody fit a particular model. These are things I can share with our principals back at home for their further consideration into the implementation of their own policies,` said Ambassador Prince.
`It really heartened me to be able to see a class of about 15 children as they engaged in role playing as a police officer, as a theater performer; while somebody else can sit in a corner and read quietly,` said Ambassador Prince following her visit with Nelson’s pre-kindergarten class. Ambassador Prince observed that this potential partnership with the University of New Orleans can greatly assist in St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ thrust towards implementation of universal access to early childhood education, as well as enhance her country’s capacity-building needs.
This shared vision of a possible collaborative partnership in Early Childhood Education is the result of dialogue between Dean James Meza, Jr. and ambassadors of Haiti, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada. The first in a series of ongoing meetings took place last October during the World Cultural Economic Forum 2008 in New Orleans, hosted by the Office of the Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu.
The proposed educational collaborative espouses mutual goals of providing high quality education, promoting healthy families and communities, and protecting the best interests of children. The participants in these programs will become reflective practitioners prepared to design, implement and sustain high quality preschool programs that emulate the following core values: teachers facilitate the development of the whole child; all children can and do learn in diverse ways; teachers support and collaborate with families of young children and effective learning activities for preschoolers are multidisciplinary in nature and reflective of the cultural and community context in which the children live.
Ambassador Prince, who first served at her Embassy as the Deputy Chief of Mission was elevated by her Government to the post of Ambassador in April of last year. She presented her credentials to the United States Government in May 2008. She is the youngest foreign Ambassador, serving as her country’s chief envoy to the United States and the Organisation of American States.

An Evening with Harry Wong
February 3, 2009
The University of New Orleans, Kappa Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education and the UNO Chapter of CMENC invited Dr. Harry Wong to speak here on theUNO campus. The event, held in Milneburg Hall, was well-attended.
Dr. Wong is, arguably, one of the country’s most famous motivational speakers on
the topics of education and classroom teaching. He teaches that the single greatest effect on student achievement is the effectiveness of the teacher. Effective teachers have classrooms that are structured, organized, and consistent. Dr. Wong demonstrated what he and others have done to ensure student success.
His techniques have been successfully adopted by thousands of educators across
the country, and he is credited with renewing entire schools and rescuing countless frustrated teachers through his common sense, research-based, no-cost approach to managing classrooms. Dr. Wong is the author of The First Days of School, which has sold three million copies. He also writes a monthly column for Teachers.net.
This event was sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi, Kappa Xi
Chapter and UNO Chapter of CMENC. Chapter President Michael Warren (see photo, center) helped orchestrate the event, as did the organizations's "counselor," Dr. Lena Nuccio-Lee (see photo, far left), who is a full-time faculty member at the College of Education and Human Development.
