Assessment 5

Applied Language Project
Instructions to Candidates in the HI Program

Description:

All candidates in the hearing impairment program must design and implement an applied project as part of their course work in EDSP 6440.  In this class we read research studies on language models, linguistic assessment, development, and instruction for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and older children who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH). You will be designing and implementing a research project in a natural language setting or an instructional setting in a classroom.  This project will be completed within the semester course in Language (EDSP 6440) and will be presented as a written product.  Your instructor will assist you in all aspects of the design and implementation of this project.  However, the final project responsibility and writing is yours alone.

Purpose:

This applied project will benefit you in a myriad of ways. First you will need to take a global look at an issue of interest in the area of language and D/HH children. Often we do not have an opportunity to integrate our knowledge and skills around a single large project. This is your opportunity to conceptualize AND implement a project from idea, to design, to implementation, to evaluation. Second, the skills you will gain should be invaluable to you as you progress through our HI program at UNO and as you continue or begin your professional practice as a teacher of students who are deaf and hard of hearing. You will also be required to produce a professional quality paper (using APA style) detailing your applied language project (ALP). You will be evaluated on this project using the attached rubric. Before undertaking this ALP, it is important to review the rubric completely to see what is expected of you.

Sequence of ALP and Review Points (RP) with your EDSP 6440 Instructor:

  • (RP) Propose idea for ALP (written) and discuss it with instructor – gain approval to continue
  • (RP) Review literature and needs information with your instructor – gain approval to continue
  • Share question and research design with class peers – adjust accordingly
  • (RP) Present question and research design with instructor - gain approval to continue
  • Gain permission from subjects and parents/guardians, teachers, and agencies/schools and implement then implement ALP
  • Collect data
  • Write-up paper including your results and their possible implications
  • (RP) Share draft with instructor for feedback
  • Using feedback, finalize product and submit for grade
