Elementary Education (Initial) While UNO does NOT offer an undergraduate degree in special education, the COEHD's general education (EDCI) undergraduate programs of study include all coursework necessary to attain an additional teaching certificate in special education – mild/moderate disabilities. It is our firm belief that a well prepared teacher is able and ready to interact successfully with a diverse group of students. One way to gain skills, knowledge and dispositions needed to work with children with disabilities is to enroll in courses that focus on the needs of students with mild/moderate disabilities. To that end, teacher candidates in our EDCI initial undergraduate baccalaureate programs are required to take a number of courses offered by the Department of Special Education and Habilitative Services. Candidates who wish to exit the program with general education AND special education certification must complete a split student teaching experience (general education/special education) or student teach in an inclusive education setting. More information on this option is available by contacting the undergraduate education coordinator in the Department of Special Education and Habilitative Services. Key Program Faculty
